IoT solutions from Libelium Open source sensor platforms with cloud access
sciencentric AG uses sensors developed by Libelium, simply because they are flexible and correspond to our vision on how to develop solutions concerning the Internet of Things (IoT). With Libelium, many scenarios can be realized.
Based in Spain, Saragossa, Libelium is an Internet of Things platform provider, with its open-source-based sensor platform being high-performance, modular and easy to program. Therefore, system integrators may implement reliable smart-city and/or machine-to-machine communication solutions in a short time period. Mentioned networks operate with different transfer protocols, depending on the data’s distance made.
With their products, Libelium supports protocols and transfers: ZigBee (2,4 GHz), 802.15.4 (2,4 GHz), WiFi (2,4 GHz), RF (868 MHz und 900 MHz), LoRa (868 MHz und 900 MHz), Sigfox (868 MHz), 3G/GPRS (Quadband: 850/900/1900/2100), Bluetooth Low Energy (2,4 GHz).
Identified data may be stored on local or external databases, furthermore certain Cloud providers offer Meshlium support. Libelium’s automation solutions appear in most industrial sectors, and element in many projects.

Smart farming in dry areas Precious water – control silos and wells with sensors
About 20% of the earth’s landmass is assigned to tropical and subtropical arid environment, such as many parts of Africa, Australia, the Arabian Peninsula as well as parts of the US, Central and South America.
Especially veldts, savannas, deserts and semideserts belong to arid environments, in which water marks the most precious source that needs to be secured. As livelihood, water cannot be wasted, making it even more important to focus on sustainable and responsible usage in farming and agriculture.
Cattle-breeding in arid environments is the most common economic factor, even though conditions are rough. Often huge farms with 5000 up to 10.000 hectares are responsible for cattle breeding, with versatile challenges, such as water shortage, overgrazing, poaching and wild animals that may kill cattle. Therefore, farm owners often have no other choice then to drive around their ground and check on the cattle.
sciencentric AG organizes so -called smart-farming-projects in such areas. Farmers need to be able check on their silos from a far distance, and thus some of the sciencentric AG employees installed corresponding sensors. Since then, these sensors are able to measure the tanks capacity and send evaluated measurements proactively to the farmers cellphone via GSM.
Also, performance data of required pumps, the water flow rate or their failure is sent as an alarm. For that matter Plug & Sense has been used. Smart- Cities that have been combined with sensors coming from the Smart-Water-Program.
GPRS is used for transfer – having high range – plugged by a simple GSM-Stick. Libelium offers own adapters as an alternative. An ultrasound sensor coming from the Smart-City-Series is used as a level meter. It has been placed within the water silo and measures its level. Additionally, the device has been equipped with battery and a solar panel. Furthermore, the pumps that pump water from the fountains onto the farm were added to the monitoring – process.
The efficient and optimized water-usage balance is the most important when water is the most precious good in such areas.
Where every drop of water counts, the optimized management of this resource cannot be worth its weight in gold.

The intelligent city “Smart City Project” – research project, realized with Libelium products
Santander is the capital of Cantabria. It is located in the north of Spain directly on the coast and is a popular vacation spot with beautiful beaches and surfing spots. The Way of St. James leads along here, and the world-famous caves of Altamira with their Stone Age paintings are one of the highlights of the region. But Santander is also a test subject. The intelligent city is being tested here; the Internet of Things is an urban reality.
Information for citizens – directly on their smartphone
The “Smart Santander Project” was developed by an alliance of companies and scientific institutions. It aims to offer a comprehensive platform for Santander and the surrounding area, providing useful information for citizens. For this purpose, sensors, actuators, cameras and screens were installed in the 35 km² urban area and a total of 1,125 Waspmotes were installed. These monitor various parameters such as noise pollution, temperature, light, CO2 content and free parking spaces.
Around 22 Meshlium Sensor Gateways were installed across the entire city. Each gateway combines around 50 Waspmote sensors and sends the data to a web server. From here, citizens can then access the information via an app. If the measured values exceed a predefined limit, an alarm is triggered so that the incident can be investigated.

Smart water cycle management Helps to react quickly to water shortages and floods - allows water consumption to be used more efficiently
In recent years, the summer months in Spain have often been very hot and dry. On the other hand, there were major storms with floods. That's why people are looking for solutions to make environmental influences more controllable.
Valencia has an intelligent water management system. It was developed by scientists and telecommunications service providers. The system allows local utilities to sustainably manage the local water cycle. The aim is to increase the benefits for the community while at the same time reducing the burden on the environment. The entire water cycle is taken into account in the project. Starting with precipitation that collects in rivers, lakes or dams. This water is then treated, stored and supplied to households and farms. Finally, the water ends up in treatment and sewage treatment plants. From there it enters the circulation again.
This is how the system works: Sensors are installed at selected points in the region that measure either air humidity, precipitation or groundwater levels. During the development, the project team also took wastewater, water levels in storage facilities and utilization in sewage treatment plants and waterworks into account.
The sensors are connected to the Libelium component Waspmote via the Proto Sensor Board. The measuring stations are installed throughout the city, but there are also mobile measuring stations that are set up for measurements wherever necessary. All sensors are connected to each other via GPS. The collected data is transmitted over the Internet and collected in a data center and can be evaluated promptly.
The system helps to react quickly and preventively to both impending floods and water shortages.

From the vineyard to the greenhouse
The Internet of Things also taps into the most primal of industries
Agriculture benefits from the Internet of Things in many ways. Automated irrigation systems or continuous monitoring of environmental conditions are just two examples. Libelium's sensors measure various values that are useful for farmers and winemakers.
Greenhouse irrigation systems can record and adjust environmental conditions in real time.
Wireless sensor networks are set up in vineyards, orchards or fields to continuously measure various environmental parameters. In this way, pest infestations can be avoided and irrigation for the plants can be optimized. The soil condition can also be monitored.
Such monitoring helps to avoid or at least reduce the use of pesticides.
The Waspmote sensors Smart Gases (Pro), Smart Agriculture and Smart Water (Ions) are suitable for use in agriculture.
